Greenpeace calls for more low carbon funding
The chancellor of the exchequer must support the Department for Energy and Climate Change if the UK is to meet its low carbon targets.
That is according to Joss Garman, a campaigner at environmental group Greenpeace, who said that a “step change” is needed in politics.
Earlier this week, a report from the Committee on Climate Change suggested that the transition to a low carbon economy needs to be sped up.
Measures including investing in greener technologies and encouraging consumers and businesses to reduce emissions are necessary to avert climate change, the study warned.
“If ministers follow the committee’s advice, there’s no reason to think the proposed reductions are unrealistic,” commented Mr Garman.
“That’s why we need a step change in politics. If we change the politics we can make the UK competitive in a low carbon world and, most important of all, enable this country to play its part in beating climate change.”
