Heat pumps-Ground source or air source-Which is best??

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) versus air source heat pumps (ASHP)… Which is best?? A common question…

Each have their respective benefits, so let’s discuss::

1). GSHP’s:

Pros- More efficient, so You’ll save more money, less intrusive, longer lifespan, less noise.

Cons- More expensive to install, you’ll either need a lot of land (or bole holes which add to the cost), you’re land will need to be “repaired”, so better suited for new builds or complete renovations? Lower RHI payment (proposed).

2). ASHP’s:

Pros-Cheaper/easier to install, better suited to retro fit projects, higher RHI payments (proposed).

Cons-Less efficient, so more expensive to run, visual impact, some noise potential, lower lifespan.

Each have their own merits, and are therefore specific to each project. I would urge you to seek independent advice on the suitability of each technology for your project…

These are just a few of the main ones. We would love to hear your thoughts/experiences??

Please remember, that both types of heat pump require high levels of insulation and , ideally, underfloor heating so are not suitable for every property.
