What is biomass? What are the benefits?

The term biomass refers to a living and recently dead organic matter, such as Wood Pellets,  which can be used as fuel.

When it is burned, carbon that it absorbed when growing is released into the atmosphere. As this happens over a relatively short time-scale it is considered carbon neutral, as long as organic matter is planted to replace any burned.

Although biomass boilers include a range of fuels, for most heating purposes, the main fuels used are wood pellets, chips or logs.

Contrary to belief, modern systems don’t necessarily need to be constantly filled up. Biomass boilers are most cost effective, in particular as a replacement for oil or LPG in the UK, when a local fuel source is used, which results in local investment and employment and also minimises transport miles to your home. Indeed, it is even more cost effective if you have your own, sustainable source of fuel!

With the introduction of the “Renewable Heat Incentive” in 2011, there’s no better time to invest in a biomass boiler.
